- o TSSnet
-
- TSSnet is DECnet for the Macintosh. The documentation was fairly straight
- forward although the installation was somewhat complex. The package comes with
- 3 applications and a DECnet driver. The driver is copied into the System Folder
- and the the Mac is reset to load the driver. DECnet is alive in background even
- when the Mac is in another application permitting access from other systems at
- any time.
-
- NCP
- The first time one runs NCP they are required to know the DECnet node number
- being assigned to the Macintosh. The user must then contact Thursby Software to
- get a key for the system. The key sets the node number and is the copy
- protection for the software. On DECnet the node number is assigned by the
- Network Manager when the system is first put onto DECnet. DECnet does not
- automatically assign nodes or broadcast node information. NCP is where you set
- up the line and circuit information and establish the node table for other
- DECnet nodes. The user can also restrict access to your node through a user
- name and password and toggle the network on and off.
-
- NET Copy
- NET Copy provide the basic functionality of DECnet End Nodes. The user has the
- ability to view remote directories, type remote files or print files to a local
- printer. File transfer is supported for text files or image files. Image files
- are stored in MacBinary format and will transport to another Mac with full
- resouce and data forks.
-
- NET Mail
- NET mail is compatible with VMS Mail. The user may create, read and send mail.
- A new mail folder may also be created from within the program. Up to 32k can be
- written into a single memo with larger documents converted automatically to
- text files on the disk.
-
- Future enhancements include the network virtual terminals, Set Host and Virtual
- Disk. They are working on the ability to use direct Ethernet connections from
- Kinetics (EtherSC and EtherPort SE). Currently this works through an RS232
- connection to the Host. Mac240 and Red Ryder may be used as a Terminal
- presently but DECnet must be disconnected.
-
- The documentation includes the source calls to implement DECnet in programs to
- allow true peer to peer program use.

- o Prevent Access
-
- The following are instructions on preventing guests from logging on to a
- particular volume on your AppleShare file server:
-
- After starting the AppleShare Admin program, create a group of all registered
- users who can access a particular Volume. Then select Volume List from the
- Volumes menu, select Volume Info from the Volumes menu, and assign the group
- you created to that Volume.. Make sure the "Owner" and the "Group" have all
- privileges, and deselect all privileges for "Everyone."
-
- Remember, version 1.1 is now available.

- o Contributors Corner
-
- The following is a connecticity success story written by one of our systems
- engineers in the North Central Region. He and the account executive assigned
- to General Electric showed the following:
-
- We had access to 3 mainframes (VAX, IBM 4381, IBM 3081), 3 LANs (AppleTalk,
- Token-Ring, Novell/Ethernet), and 4 Mac applications (Excel, Word, Draw, and
- MacLink+)...
-
- SIMULTANEOUSLY!!
-
- We pulled Wordstar documents off of Token-Ring and Novell, REGIS graphics off
- the VAX, text and numbers off of both IBM mainframes, and a Lotus spreadsheet
- off the AT. We enhanced the REGIS graphics in Draw, created graphs from the
- Lotus and IBM mainframe numbers using Excel, and then pasted the resulting text
- and graphics into a MS-Word document.
-
- This final document was then printed to the Laser and saved back onto the
- Token–Ring network.
-
- The presentation was done on a Conrac Mac Plus with 2 Meg of RAM. The Mac was
- connected to AppleTalk on the printer port and a DEC terminal server (on
- Ethernet) thru the modem port. The DEC terminal server gave us the capability
- to toggle between a VAX 11/780 VMS session and an IBM 4381 running VM/CMS. On
- AppleTalk we had a Netway 1000A (connected to a remote IBM 3081 under MVS), an
- IBM AT on TOPS, another Mac, and a LaserWriter.
-
- The IBM AT, using an Ungerman-Bass card, was also on a Token-Ring network as
- well as on a Novell server running over EtherNet. Volumes from Token-Ring and
- Novell were mounted on the AT and then published to the TOPS network.
-
- On the Mac Plus we mounted the Token-Ring and Novell volumes and an IBM AT
- directory and then launched Excel, MS-Word, MacDraw, the Netway 3278 software,
- Mac240, and MacLink+ under Switcher.

- o MenuFonts Desk Accessory
-
- MenoFonts is a DA that allows you to see font names in their own typefaces when
- you use the Font menu..It works only with applications that have a standard
- Font menu, inlcuding: MacPaint, FullPaint, Mac Write, SuperPaint, and
- Microsoft Works 1.0. It will NOT work with MacDraw or ohter applications that
- don't have the standard Font menu. It also won't work with MORE, which has no
- Font menu at all. Other applications that can't take advantage of MenuFonts
- include Microsoft Word 1.05 & Excel and MacDraft.
-
- Two utilities come with MenuFonts. One is called LockOut the other, Fast
- Formatter. LockOut locks your screen so no one else can use your computer
- unless they know the password. Fast Formatter allows mass initialization of
- blank disks.
-
- The three products cost $15 from Beyond, 3865 N.Oracle Road, Tucson, Arizona
- 85705. (602) 323-4547.

- o AppleLink Tools For Your Convenience
-
- We'd like to remind you about some new tools designed to enhance your
- AppleLink service:
-
- -- Search by Subject
-
- To speed up your searches in the AppleLink Tech Info library, use the
- Search by Subject desk accessory. Search by Subject lets you click on
- predetermined classifications and specific subjects, eliminating long
- lists of articles with similar search criteria. Download Search by Subject
- from the Software Updates folder on the Apple Programs board, and give it a
- try. Please link your comments or suggestions about this desk accessory to
- the AppleLink address, SEARCH.
-
- -- GLUE
-
- GLUE(TM) from Solutions, Inc. lets you read newsletters, spreadsheets,
- or graphics without having the program that created these documents.
- Or you can send documents to other AppleLink users without worrying
- about what software they have. Just download ImageSaver, Viewer, and
- the Viewer/DA from the Glue folder in the Software Updates folder on the
- Apple Programs board.
-
- -- PackIt III V1.3
-
-
- PackIt III V1.3, a file packing utility by Harry Chesley that allows multiple
- files to be compressed, encrypted, and packed together in a single file, is now
- available on AppleLink.
-
- You can use PackIt III to combine and compress files for transmission over
- AppleLink, saving time and connect charges.
-
- The compression feature of PackIt III decreases the size of files by
- approximately 25%, reducing the time it takes to download or upload
- AppleLink files. You can create a PackIt III file, which contains several
- individual files, eliminating the need to upload or download files one at
- a time over AppleLink.
-
- You can find PackIt III in the Software Updates folder on the Apple Programs
- Board. PackIt III is distributed to you as part of your AppleLink address,
- and is for use only in conjunction that address.
